About this app
Overview, features and application details
Point your phone at the sky and it tells you what you are looking at. Sky Map names stars, planets, and constellations in real time. It started as Google Sky Map and is now free and open source.
Sky Map turns your phone into a window on the night sky. Just point it up and the app draws the stars, planets, and constellations exactly where they are above you.
This one has a fun history. It began life as Google Sky Map, back when Google still made it. These days a community of skywatchers keeps it alive as a free, open-source project, and they rebuilt it from scratch in 2026 with a new engine and a fresh look.
You can tap any star or planet for a quick info card with rise and set times. The Moon, eclipses, and planet positions are timed accurately, and there is a true-to-life mode that draws the Sun and Moon at their real scale. Home-screen widgets keep you posted on the Moon phase and what is worth seeing tonight.
Nothing about it feels heavy. Location stays optional — skip it and type in a place name instead. Your location never leaves your phone. It works in 28 languages and asks for nothing at startup, which is rare for apps these days.
